Inspectable Item

Inspectable Item is an eight page journal made entirely from combat paper that was distributed to active duty soldiers waiting for deployment and returned combat veterans. It is designed to fit in a pocket, to be always available to record impressions or ponder experiences. One hundred hand-made journals were created in conjunction with Handpapermaking Magazine as part of their annual fundraising auction. The winning bidder was Tim Barrett, teacher and master papermaker at the University of Iowa. Handpapermaking Magazine received a donation; we got the opportunity to send the unique journals to veterans on Tim's behalf.

The journals were made from combat paper in the paper mill at the BluSeed Studio in Saranac Lake, NY with letterpress covers printed at Free Your Mind Press in June 2010. Copies were sent to a military hospital in Missouri and to a healing retreat for returned veterans in the Adirondacks. They were all given away; none are for sale.

Measuring only 4" x 5 1/2", the journal is meant to be used, conveniently fitting into a utility blouse, secured by the standard velcro closure. It is meant to be handled, to be kept close; to record impressions, to express opinions, to ask questions. The stories contained in the fiber add their collective memories to the individual voice of the returning soldier.
