I Hacky Sacked in Iraq
2009
Combat Paper Press
|
I Hacky Sacked in Iraq is an artist book created by returned Iraq war veteran Nathan Lewis. Completed in August of 2009, the artist book is a collection of personal poems and essays, based upon his military experience, most written since his return from Iraq in 2003.
|
Most of these pieces were written long after returning home from Iraq, after memories digest and nonsense can dry up and blow away. Don't expect to read about heroic feats of soldiering or an epiphany of anti-war defiance. I did neither. Time has passed. Some memories remain, some fade.
- from the Introduction, I Hacky Sacked in Iraq

The limited edition book has 39 pages, is illustrated with four personal black and white photos and features a hand sewn binding. The cover is made from handmade combat paper, paper made from the artist's uniform while serving in Iraq along with shredded American flags and U. S. currency. This is the first edition created by the Combat Paper Press.
The 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" format is meant to be viewed closely in hand to best appreciate the texture of the hand crafted paper cover and hand sewn binding.
A limited first edition of thirty was printed on recycled paper and bound by the artist in Burlington, VT. The books are numbered and signed by the artist on the colophon. Price is $30.
A limited quantity is available for sale to individual collectors. A second printing with a letterpress cover is anticipated. For more information or to purchase a copy of I Hacky Sacked in Iraq, contact the Combat Paper Press or the artist at
