Combat Paper Residency
Nathan Lewis
 |
Nathan completed his first artist book, I Hacky Sacked in Iraq, in August of 2009 at the Combat Paper Press in Burlington, VT. The book is a collection of personal poems and essays, based upon his military experience, most written since his return from Iraq in 2003.
Most of these pieces were written long after returning home from Iraq, after memories digest and nonsense can dry up and blow away. Don't expect to read about heroic feats of soldiering or an epiphany of anti-war defiance. I did neither. Time has passed. Some memories remain, some fade.
- from the Introduction, I Hacky Sacked in Iraq
The limited edition book is illustrated with personal photos and features a sewn binding with covers made from handmade combat paper. This is the first edition created by the Combat Paper Press.
Assisting Nathan with the layout and binding were accomplished book artist Pam DeLuco from San Francisco Center for the Book and art historian Nick Dubois, the curator of the Combat Paper exhibits in the United Kingdom who was visiting the studio on holiday.
Nathan is continuing his degree in secondary social studies education at the State University of New York College at Potsdam. |
