Combat Paper Residency

Jennifer Pacanowski

Portrait

Jennifer visited the Green Door Studio in March 2009 to learn basic bookbinding and papermaking skills. She worked along side combat papermakers and fellow resident, Robert Possehl, during her one week stay at the paper studio set up inside the Firehouse Gallery on Church Street in downtown Burlington.

Jennifer is a US Army veteran who served in Iraq. She pulled her first sheet of paper at a Combat Paper workshop held on Martha's Vineyard during the summer of 2008. The experience of shredding her own uniforms and creating handcrafted paper was so empowering that she joined in a second workshop at Rutgers University in the fall.

I went to Vermont to create paper and work with people who understood me and would support my personal sense of creativity. I got to see my poetry on full scale combat paper. I have never been so proud. I needed to see it for myself, to make sure it was really happening. My words printed on Combat Paper brought tears to my eyes and a knot to my stomach.

Jennifer's goal is to create a handcrafted book of personal poetry, to share her unique experience of serving as a soldier in Iraq.
