Carolina Performing Arts, Gerrard Hall.  Chapel Hill, NC

Combat Paper will be in residence at Gerrard Hall for three days facilitating workshops and showcasing the recently completed print portfolio that accompanies Kronos Quartet's Beyond Zero: 1914-1918.

 

February 2 - 6

University of Iowa, Hancher Auditorium.  Iowa City, IA

Combat Paper will be in residence at the University of Iowa for the week leading up to the Beyond Zero: 1914-1918 performance by Kronos Quartet. The residency will include workshops with the Center for the Book, Studio Arts Program and a public lecture on Thursday, February 5th at the Iowa City Public Library.

The Printing Museum, University of Houston.  Houston, TX

Drew Cameron of Combat Paper Project will present lectures at the University of Houston (Thursday) and The Printing Museum (Friday), then lead a workshop at the museum on Saturday. The weekend event is in conjunction with the closing of Postcards from the Trenches exhibit at the museum.

Merced County Arts Council. Merced, CA

Drew Cameron of Combat Paper Project will present a papermaking workshop (10:00-2:00) at the Merced County Arts Council (Merced, CA) in conjunction with the "Emergency / Emergence: Life After War exhibit". The exhibit features the work of Aaron Hughes, Ehren Toole, Mark Pinto and Drew Cameron. There is also a demonstration by Ehren Toole (3:00pm), a reception (6:00pm) followed by a round-table discussion with the artists on the 13th.

Ash Street Project, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Oregon College of Art and Craft. Portland, OR

Drew Cameron, Jesse Albrecht and Aaron Hughes will be artists in residence along with Giuseppe Pellicano, Mark Pinto, Thomas Orr and Kevin Basl for a series of workshops, talks and exhibitions. Tuesday evening April 7th, an evening artist talk at OCAC. April 8 - 10th, in the PNCA gallery from 3-6 pm; Open to the public, we will be in the gallery creating pulp prints. Combat Paper NJ at Haystack Mountain School of Craft. Deer Isle, ME

We are very excited to be heading back to Maine! We will be conducting a week-long workshop at the Haystack Mountain School of Craft with Maine Veterans and other veterans from around the country. This prestigious school has been extremely gracious, along with a very generous donor, to make their campus accessible to 24 veterans looking to make paper and amplify their voice through art making. For the last year, Combat Paper NJ has worked diligently at setting up this unprecedented workshop. All 24 veterans attending are hand-picked veteran artists. Each will be strengthening their practice and specific stories while honing skills in paper making. This week is in a support of the burgeoning Veterans Art Movement, and a continuation of the landmark Veterans' Art Movement retreat held at the Blue Mountain Center in upstate NY, last October. The week is also kicking off a large project that Combat Paper NJ is excited to be a part of in the coming year. This community art installation project is called By Our Own Hand, and created by Donna Bassin and David Keefe. More information can be found at www.byourownhand.com. Combat Paper Project Workshop - The Foundation of FirstHealth and Sandhills Community College are presenting a 3-day papermaking residency led by Combat Paper founder and artist Drew Cameron. Details are still being determined.

Military Appreciation Day - To celebrate the military's contributions to Moore County, the Arts Council is presenting a special day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 on the Campbell House property. The exhibit will be open to the public, along with other special activities, including a concert by the Army Ground Forces Band's Loose Cannons; demonstrations by the K2 Solutions Service Dog Program and the 550th Military Working Dog Detachment; an open Combat Paper Project workshop led by Drew Cameron and sponsored by K2 Solutions; art activities for children by Delaney Kjellsen of Artistic Vision; and several military charities and service organizations on-hand to inform military families and general public about services available to the military community.

As an ongoing collaboration with Combat Paper Nevada, Drew Cameron will be the visiting artist for a weekend intensive, exploring large sheet formation and alternative process to add to the practice and technique of Combat Paper Nevada's team of facilitators.

San Jose State University. San Jose, CA

Combat Paper will facilitate a two day, open enrollment workshop on campus both days from 1-5pm at the Arts Building Auto Bay (IS147) on campus. Each day begins with a papermaking discussion from 10-11am, introducing the process followed by the afternoon workshop. This workshop is sponsored byThe Office of Military and Veteran Student Services and the VA VITAL program at SJSU. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Carolina Performing Arts, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill, NC

Combat Paper will be creating a working paper mill inside Gerrard Hall on UNC's campus for five days of workshop residency. All components of the papermaking process will be in action throughout the week. Public workshopswill take place in Gerrard Hall on Tuesday September 15th from 4pm-7pm; Wednesday September 16th from 5pm-7pm; and Friday September 18th from 10am-noon. A public demonstration of the Combat Paper Project will take place on Polk Place on Tuesday September 15th and Wednesday September 16th from 10am-1pm. This programming is presented by Peace and Justice Studies as part of a three-day workshop series featuring U.S. service members in light of Veterans Day.

With the support of faculty and students from bookbinding, other fine arts programs and art therapy, Combat Paper will facilitate workshops that will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 6 and 7, at the Eskenazi Fine Arts Center, 1410 Indiana Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The week-long interdisciplinary conference with Combat Paper will assist participants in creating paper from uniforms worn by former and current military members. Throughout the week, visiting scholars, students, faculty, and members of the Meadville community will join Nate Lewis in exploring the aftermath of war and other traumatic events through critical and creative presentations.

In conjunction with the residency and exhibition "Containers of Community : Ehren Tool", Combat Paper will facilitate a two-day weekend workshop at the culmination of the exhibit. Combat Paper Project uses traditional hand papermaking to transform clothing rags (often military uniforms) into paper. The process broadens the traditional narrative surrounding the military experience and warfare. The work also generates a conversation between veterans and civilians regarding our collective responsibilities and shared understanding in war.

In conjunction with the Clarice Smith Center visiting artist program, Combat Paper will be facilitating a three-day workshop at the Stamp's Student Union Art and Learning Center, and participating in the Creative Dialog Series (May 1st @ 7:30 pm). The week will culminate with two performances of Homer's Coat: An Iliad on Friday and Saturday, May 2nd & 3rd. A full week of Combat Paper and Warrior Writers workshops! Participants will make paper from military uniforms. A special focus will be on making sheets to be used in hand-bound journals that will be used later in the week during the Warrior Writers workshops. A variety of military training manuals and pamphlets have been gathered for incorporation into the journals.

Combat Paper Project: Uniforms into Handmade Paper

Combat papermakers will conduct a workshop with veterans and their families spread over three consecutive evenings, June 3 - 6, 6-9 pm. This hands-on workshop will teach the entire process of how to transform your own clothing into paper art.

Participants are encouraged to bring items of clothing or fabric, including military uniforms, which they would like to transform into paper. The instructor, artist Drew Cameron, will also provide fibers, so bringing material is not a requirement to attend. In addition, any photographs, letters or materials from their service may also be brought along for inspiration.

This event in the Nation's capital is an opportunity to highlight the myriad ways in which arts, crafts and the United States military intersect, to help foster bridges between three important yet disparate worlds. This six-day conference offers collaborative arts focused workshops, film screenings, a Combat Paper gallery exhibition at the Corcoran, and presentations on the history of the arts and the military. Parnassus Paper at Polip International Poetry Festival. Pristina, Kosovo

Drew Cameron, Drew Matott and Nic Dubois will work with poets from the former Yugoslav nations in a commemorative process of handpapermaking. The papers are destined for an archive of poets from all participating Olympic nations that will be on display and archived at South Bank Centre (London, UK). Each poet will write on the handmade sheets they create and will create a collaborative book of poetry for the Poetry Parnassus event. The tour is supported in part by a grant from the Yackel Foundation.

Combat papermakers will bring the studio to the gallery to highlight the artistic and transformational process of papermaking. The Firehouse Gallery will be transformed into a working paper and book studio during the eight week exhibit of the Combat Paper Project. Artists will be beating pulp, pulling paper sheets and working their craft while viewers peruse the hanging art work. The public is invited to engage the artists as they work. 2007

 

Combat began in the basement of an old broom factory in the south end arts district of Burlington, VT in May 2007 when Drew Cameron cut his uniform from his body and turned the material into handmade paper. One of the first few performances and exhibitions occurred at the Green Door Studio from 2007-2010. In San Francisco 2011-2018 primarily in the Mission District, and 2018-2023 Iowa City, Iowa, a UNESCO city of literature.
