Flags of Freedom: A Work in Progress is a dynamic multimedia event designed to explore and celebrate the historic and personal stories of veterans, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities, with a focus on two pivotal holidays: Flag Day and Juneteenth. The event uses the American flag as a platform to delve into collective histories, emphasizing the intersections of art, culture, and activism. Through a series of creative workshops, discussions, and performances, this event seeks to engage, educate, and empower attendees by connecting diverse communities around the powerful symbolism of the American flag.
The event will feature a variety of hands-on activities, including creating full-sized sheets of handmade paper embossed with the American flag. Participants will have the opportunity to express their unique perspectives on identity, activism, and heritage. In addition to the art-making process, there will be thought-provoking discussions and performances that explore the cultural significance of the American flag, examining its evolving role and how it resonates with different communities today.
This event is presented by the DJD Foundation, Our Story inc., and VA Sierra Nevada with support from The City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission and Nevada Arts Council.
